SBB Halbtax Plus Review: The Prepaid Option Explained

Published

Halbtax Plus takes the standard half-fare discount and adds prepaid travel credit at a steeper discount, aimed at people who travel more than an occasional Halbtax user but not enough to justify a full annual pass (GA).

How it works

You buy Halbtax Plus in one of several credit tiers (loaded as a set amount of prepaid travel credit for the year). Trips are deducted from that credit at a discount steeper than standard half-fare pricing, until the credit runs out or the year ends.

Who it makes sense for

  • Regular travellers who take multiple trips a month but don’t commute daily on a fixed route
  • People who want to lock in a travel budget upfront, rather than paying per trip
  • Households who travel together often and want to plan a fixed annual transport cost

Where it falls short

If you use up your credit early in the year, you’re back to standard half-fare pricing (or need to buy more credit), so it rewards fairly consistent, predictable travel rather than one big trip and then nothing. Daily commuters are usually still better off with a regional pass or GA, see our SBB passes guide for the full comparison.

Best for / avoid if

Best for: frequent-but-not-daily travellers who want predictable travel costs and a steeper discount than standard Halbtax.

Avoid if: your travel is either very occasional (plain Halbtax is enough) or a genuine daily commute (an annual pass likely wins).

Not sure which fits? Try the Financial Planner, it factors in your commute pattern when comparing transport options.
