The SBB Half-Fare Travelcard (Halbtax) is the single most common discount card in Switzerland, and for most residents who travel more than occasionally, it pays for itself within a handful of trips.
How it works
Halbtax cuts most standard train, bus, and boat tickets roughly in half, for a flat annual fee. It has no usage limit, you simply show it (or have it linked to your app) when buying any ticket, and the discount applies automatically.
Who it makes sense for
- Anyone taking more than a few return trips a year outside their local zone
- Occasional commuters who don’t travel daily, so a full annual pass (GA) isn’t worth it
- Students and newcomers who want flexibility without committing to a bigger annual pass
Where it falls short
