Public transport in Switzerland is excellent but not cheap at full fare, which is exactly why the national discount card system exists, and why most regular users are on one.
The main discount options
- A half-fare style card cuts most tickets roughly in half and pays for itself quickly for anyone travelling more than occasionally
- A general/annual travelcard makes sense mainly for frequent daily commuters once you compare its cost to your actual annual ticket spend
- Regional and cantonal season passes can beat national products for commuters who stay within one zone or network
- Off-peak and saver fares booked in advance are often meaningfully cheaper than flexible full-fare tickets
How to decide
Add up your actual annual spend on full-fare tickets for your real commute, then compare it against each pass tier. The break-even point is usually lower than people expect once daily commuting is involved.
Best for / avoid if
Best for: anyone commuting most weekdays, an annual or regional pass usually wins outright.
Avoid if: you travel rarely, in that case a half-fare style card without a full travelcard is usually the better value.
